"Textile Name:Matsuage fire festival in Hanase August 15th"
This fire festival is an offering to Atago's fire god and a prayer for successful crops and protection against fire as well. A 20-meter high wooden pole called a torogi is placed in the center and a thousand of torches called a agematsu are planted around it.
Men light the torches, swirl them and throw them one after another into a basket called moji which sits on top of the pole. The fire sparks fly round and round in a beautiful arc to light up the night sky.
August's painting is "the Matsuage fire festival" at Hanase in the northern part of Kyoto. The purpose of this festival is to pray for a good harvest by throwing torches towards a 20-meter high wooden pole to set it on fire. Hanase is a soba(buckwheat noodle)-producing district and is famous for the good soba you can eat there. Based on that, August's seasonal confections of Kyoto are made with soba. They are made of a sweetened white bean paste mixed with grated wasabi and glazed soba berries, and topped with a roasted soba berry. The fiery hot taste of wasabi is peculiar to this confection.
