"Fan Words"

Folding Folding Fan are believed to have originated in China, but the foldable Folding Fan is said to have been created in Kyoto in the early Heian Era.

Folding Fan have also developed in various countries, and a method of communication using fans called "fan language" became popular in Paris around the 17th century. It spread throughout Europe and was used until around the 19th century. (There are various theories.)

Upper class women expressed their romantic feelings without speaking a word by the movement of a fan. In Spain, it is said that at balls, women would sneakily convey their feelings to the man they loved by using the words of a fan...

Apparently there was even a dictionary of fan language.

Nowadays we live in a world where we can easily express our feelings through words, but back then people would convey feelings they couldn't put into words by using Folding Fan.
