One day story / Small talks from SOU · SOU Producer Takeshi Wakabayashi
"Tea Rooms: These and That (82)"
Today is Sunday! This is the corner featuring Terada Yu, the sheltered daughter of a sukiya-style carpenter family!
Spring has arrived.
I'm sure you all have something that comes to mind when you think of spring.

When I think of spring in my tea ceremony lessons...
"Fishing Kettle and Travel Chest"

The kettle swaying gently on a chain hanging from the ceiling is called the "fishing kettle."
A "shelf" is used to place and display utensils during the tea ceremony.
There are many different types of shelves and their uses depend on the season and the occasion (which is why it's hard to remember!), but in the school I practice, the standard is "Travel chests are the time for spring!"
In the past, it has also appeared in the SOU・SOU staff diary.

As Seno comments, the reason we can think, "It would be fun to go on a picnic like this," is because we live in a peaceful world.
It was originally invented by Sen no Rikyu to carry to the battlefield during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's siege of Odawara.
Therefore, the chest of drawers is designed to be able to store a complete set of Tea Ceremony Utensils.
I haven't studied enough about the significance of taking a break on the battlefield, but since it was Hideyoshi and Rikyu, I can't help but read into it and think that they must have had some thoughts about it.
Still, it's kind of cute to think of Rikyu carrying it all on his back.
"It's the season for travel chests... I want one."
With just that one comment, my brother made me a genuine "travel chest of drawers"!!

I may be a little biased, but my brother, who is originally skilled in joinery (making Woodwork products such as boxes and furniture), made it, and it is beautifully made to the exact specifications.
It really is a travel chest of drawers, even down to the drop-down fittings on the front door.

So I immediately decided to pick out some tools and start displaying them.
Ah, at this point I'd like to hang up a fishing kettle... but I wonder if there is such a thing as a fishing kettle...
And I have to rummage around in Greyish Blue again.

I don't really care about tools, but it's exciting to have tools that I want to cherish at hand.
Ummm... I spend my days secretly planning what to request next.
"to be continued"

I am a complete ignorant person about the "way of tea", so I always feel it is presumptuous of me to comment on Yu's "Tea Rooms Here and There", but I will do so again this time (*^^*)
We understand that the arrangements of flowers, hanging scrolls, sweets, etc. are meant to give a sense of the season, but how can a "travel chest" be "spring"?
In Seno-san's diary, there were flowers arranged on top of the "travel chest"...
However, it is a profound subject ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ
So, in addition to being impressed by the charm of the “Travel Chest” that my brother made, I thought to myself, “If this had a handle, it would be a “Oka Mochi” (a traditional Japanese chest of drawers)…” I am just an ordinary person…

Thank you for your comment.
I am currently practicing indoors, with a travel chest and a hanging pot, but I would like to close my eyes, let my imagination run wild, and feel the wind in the fields...
That's why it's spring lol
Okamochi is great! It's true, they have almost the same uses! Lol
The contents could be tea ceremony Tea Ceremony Utensils, ramen dumplings, or half a bowl of fried rice!
